Frequently asked questions about Educational Pictionary
What is Pictionary?
Pictionary is a board game in which players draw a word or phrase for their teammates to guess before time runs out. This version is a free online Pictionary adapted for the classroom: the teacher configures the terms, teams and rounds, and the game tracks the score automatically. No physical cards or dice are needed.
How do you play Pictionary online?
First configure the teams (2 to 6) and terms (custom or from the thematic bank). Then, by turn, one team member sees the word on screen, hides it so teammates cannot see it, and starts drawing it on the digital canvas. The team guesses aloud. The teacher presses Correct when they get it or Pass if time runs out. At the end of all rounds the ranking is shown.
Can I load my own terms?
Yes. In the Terms tab you can write your own words, one per line. It works for any subject or level: vocabulary from a literary work, chemistry terms, words in English, geometric figures, or any curricular content. You can also combine custom terms with the included thematic banks for more variety.
What thematic banks are included?
18 banks with 20 terms each, organized by subject and theme: Mathematics, Geography, Biology, Physics, History, Literature, Music, Art, English vocabulary, English verbs (Actions), Animals, Objects, Technology, Environment, Sports, Places, Professions and Food. You can activate several at once to mix them.
How does the drawing canvas work?
The canvas is a built-in digital whiteboard. The artist can use pencil or eraser, choose from 10 colors and three stroke widths. It also has undo (Ctrl+Z) and clear canvas. It works with mouse and with touch screen.
How many teams can play?
2 to 6 teams can play. Each team has its own color for identification in the score. Teams take turns: each one has their drawing turn in each round before the next round begins.
How does the scoring system work?
When the team guesses correctly, the teacher presses Correct and the team earns the configured points (50, 100, 150 or 200). If you enabled the bonus, they earn extra points for guessing in the first 10 seconds. If time runs out or the teacher presses Pass, the team earns no points. At the end of the turn, the word is revealed for everyone. At the end of all rounds, the final ranking is shown.
Can it be projected on the classroom screen?
Yes, it is designed for projection. The artist approaches the computer to see the word privately and then hides it before starting to draw, while the rest of the team sees the canvas on the projected screen. The teacher controls the Correct and Pass buttons from the same computer.
Can it be played on a tablet or touch screen?
Yes. The canvas supports touch events, so on a tablet or interactive whiteboard the artist can use their fingers or a stylus. The game adapts to different screen sizes.
For which educational level is it designed?
It works for both elementary and secondary school. In elementary it is ideal for vocabulary, animals, objects and simple concepts. In secondary it allows working with specific terminology from any subject: biology, history, chemistry, geography, literature or English. The teacher adapts the terms to the level and content being taught.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. The free online Pictionary runs in the browser without installation or sign-up. Compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on computer, tablet and touch screen.
How long does a game last?
With 2 teams, 2 rounds and 60 seconds per turn, a game lasts approximately 8–12 minutes. With 4 teams, 3 rounds and 90 seconds, it can last 20–25 minutes. You can adjust the rounds and time to fit the length of the class period.
What competencies does it develop?
Educational Pictionary works Oral expression (guessing involves active listening and vocabulary), creative thinking (representing concepts visually), collaboration (the team thinks together) and Critical thinking (identifying the key characteristics of a concept to draw or guess it).
What pedagogies support this game?
Educational Pictionary is grounded in Game-Based Learning, Purposeful Gamification and Cooperative Learning. Visual representation of concepts activates visual memory and reinforces deep vocabulary comprehension.
